Nigeria’s Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola wants a “compulsory” Architect Registration Council of Nigeria number for all architects in the country to curb building failures and collapse. Nigeria Fashola

Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has recommended a compulsory ARCON Project Registration Number System to derail the determination of quacks and contain the scourge of building failures and collapse.

The minister, represented by the ministry’s Director for Public Private Partnership, Eucharia Alozie, said: “The Federal Government is therefore in full support of the APRN concept, especially the idea that architects are to tag projects with registration number. We are thus waiting for its implementation and that training and re-training of architects should be intensified as obtainable in other clients.

He said ARCON should ensure that the activities of quacks in the profession are checkmated and corruption associated with the profession, especially with regards to the procurement of architectural services, is curtailed. Also, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi advised the ARCON to ensure implementation at the state level, adding that the country needs more architects at the state level.

Good idea, but how did we get to the point a lawyer[non-engineer] manage three engineering ministries & telling them what shld be compulsory to their registration & not what is compulsory to their leadership! Maybe an NSE member with COREN can head the ministry of justice?

Na today. Hmmmm

Men writing concern design with strength :ignorance

There is nothing wrong with our existing building laws and regulations than lack of enforcing standards and supervision. We always blame others for failures that can be avoided.

It is not by registration council. We have Medical and Dental Council in Nigeria yet the health of our President keeps 'collapsing', he has to travel to England for health care. Let there be a strong supervisory body to approve, monitor, inspect and certify buildings.

Correct sir.let beg Lagos town planning to implement this and it will help a lot.

Dear Minister, the architect is only responsible for the beauty and concept of the building, the Civil Engineer is responsible for the Strength and rigidity of the building. If you want to stop building collapse review the practice of building engineering in the country.

Can't wait for you to be Nigeria President!

This is what you hear when a lawyer is made minister of housing and works. An architect isn't responsible for stability of structure, they only design and are after aesthetics

Work n housing ministry should be headed by a construction professionals who understood the technical arrangements of the system.

There is no sense in this statement, the building collapse problems are from the elite that patronize quacks like dealing with artisans instead of professionals.

You mean there is nothing like that already?!

Honourable minister is right ! I am shocked to hear they are not registered ! Way to go our honourable minister 👍

Oga minister will that give us light?

Architects do the structural designing while Civic Engineers do the structural detailing. Structural detailing determines the strength

Abeg make we hear word

The structural design of buildings is not the responsibility of Architects but that of Structural Engineers.

I like the idea

Architects design buildings but Civil Engineers do the structural detailing.

This would make a lot of sense. Good one

A good suggestion. A wonderful one for that matter from Fashola. It’s really good.

A good suggestion. This is real good
