New Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer today named his first cabinet - with top roles for a number of Greater Manchester MPs.
Ms Rayner, who was congratulated by former MP Michael Gove, who held the same role for the Tories, was first pick for his new cabinet and was also named Deputy Prime Minister, a role she has held since 2020.Rachel Reeves, meanwhile, was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, becoming the first woman to take charge of the Treasury. The former Bank of England economist retains the brief she held in the shadow cabinet, as was widely expected.
Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, was appointed Business and Trade Secretary and the president of the Board of Trade. He, too, held the same role in the shadow cabinet.
