'New-build homes not fire safe', BBC investigation finds

Houses developed by Persimmon Homes and Bellway Homes have potentially dangerous fire safety issues, BBC programme Watchdog Live has found.

The barriers are used to form a complete seal between different areas of a home, and without them, experts say, fire and smoke can spread five to ten times faster."A comparison is if you were to buy a new car and you ultimately found that it didn't have an airbag in it […] It's an integral safety feature within the home," said industry expert Andrew Mellor.

Subsequent investigations by Persimmon Homes found missing fire barriers at 37% of homes on the Greenacres estate. "This should not have happened and we would like to apologise to all affected homeowners and assure them that we are doing everything we can to rectify the issue swiftly," it added.BBC Watchdog Live also uncovered potentially dangerous fire safety issues in developments in Kent and West Lothian built by Bellway Homes.

My old house in scotland was built in 1860 and would be interested to see how fire resistant it is, the walls would probably survive as they are so damp

BBCPolitics Another Tory farce, this Govt. should implement all of the RULES laid down by the EU about the house size, fire protective measures etc.

My house was built in 2003 and is a brick outer skin on wood frame with plasterboard. Internal walls are all wood frame with plasterboard but nothing else between them

Looks like the same people involved in the cladding, burning people to death for a fist full of dollars!!

BBCPolitics Homes built by people who don't care and I'm not talking about Perssimon's ! but the people on the ground !

BBCPolitics More corner cutting in the building trade no wonder they now throw houses up not build them with the love and care there occupants would cherish when sold. Fire is a killer, sometimes a silent killer cutting corners on fire safety is a life threatening process Rectify this asap

They all look the same too, square brick houses I used to draw at school aged 4!!!

BBCPolitics Don't set it on fire then... simple really

Often build the wrong homes too - so many delux houses and not enough truely affordable starter homes.

BBCPolitics Profits safety

Why oh why buy anything off Persimmon Homes? 😱

I expect they are the size of dolls houses as well.

After all the scandals relating to Persimmon homes over poor build quality and now that they are not fire safe I wonder whom is still buying these houses.

Anything to make those homes more affordable though. Surely a low mortgage is worth burning to death for in tory Britain?
