'An affordable, secure home is a basic human right. When there is a desperate shortage of housing it cannot be right that homes are being turned into rooms for tourists.' CarolineLucas writes for MetroUK 💪

When the main use of a property becomes short-term lets on sites like Airbnb, it doesn’t just mean homes being taken out of the private rented sector for the visitor market. There is also an impact on the sense of local community and the loss of communal spaces and facilities. We’ve all heard stories of Airbnb guests who rent a property and party all night with little regard for the impact on neighbours.

There are also serious questions around issues such as compliance with fire safety regulations, for example. Not only does this put tourists at risk, it also poses unfair competition with those registered guest houses and bed and breakfasts that are required to meet higher standards.

CarolineLucas A house is not a human right, freedom & equality are. Like food & clothing they are things you need, things you should be expected to work & pay for yourself. If people have worked hard & bought more than 1 house, well done them, it’s their choice what they do with THEIR property
