Vancouver families less likely to prioritize car friendliness than those in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal

Young families in Vancouver care more about a neighbourhood’s transit-friendliness when buying a home than whether it is car- or bike-friendly.

Brad Henderson, the CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, said there is “a real dearth of information” covering that cohort, one that is about nine million people strong across the country and set to be a significant part of the future residential real estate economy. “I think it’s definitely a reflection of the current challenges driving to work these days in Vancouver. Certainly, the bridges can be a significant challenge for anyone who is off the island proper. I think the sense is that the public transit system as it is currently configured works well.”

Henderson surmised that the interest among young families in homes in proximity to transit would likely be found among renters as well. But McMullin also pointed to logical locations for higher density that in her opinion had yet to really pan out, such Vancouver along the Cambie Corridor, or Port Moody along the Evergreen Line.
