'Better than I expected': Lucky Gattellari to be home for Christmas | Kate_McClymont

“Better than I expected," quipped Lucky Gattellari on learning he will be out of jail just before Christmas following his sentencing for conspiring to extort millions of dollars from wealthy property developer Ron Medich. His co-accused, convicted drug trafficker Shayne Hatfield, 53, received the same sentence of 26 months, which was backdated to start at the end of 2017. Hatfield's earliest release date is January 8, 2020.

Gattellari, 69, a former boxer, first attempted to defraud Medich in 2013 using the services of a recently released armed robber, Bobby McCarthy to demand $10 million and later $15 million. “It was never the Crown’s case that he was going to give false evidence in the Medich trial,” noted Judge Hock. The first extortion attempt collapsed in December 2013 when it was suspected that the police were on to them.
