MIRI: Residents of Long Busang in central Sarawak are appealing for help to rebuild homes that collapsed due to recent flooding.

"They need building materials to rebuild their homes, as entire blocks of houses collapsed due to the force of the water," said Society for Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak secretary Michael Jok.

Scrips is helping to coordinate help for the affected living at the upper reaches of Sungai Balui, which is about four hours by boat from the Bakun Dam entrance. Meanwhile, Save Sarawak Rivers chairman Peter Kallang said at the height of the floods, even the rooftops of buildings were inundated. "The floods in Long Busang could have been well above 20ft during its peak as a double-storey building was completely submerged in floodwaters up to its roof. That was a very severe flood," he said.In the meantime, the state welfare authorities are channelling food and drinking water and other daily necessities to residents in the area.
