Frustrated residents who were evacuated from a unit complex in Sydney's inner south face an uncertain wait to return to their homes, after "ongoing and persistent cracking" to the building rapidly worsened.The evacuated building in Bourke Street Mascot.The residents had been warned last week they might need to evacuate after building props were installed in the apartment block's underground carpark in a bid to remedy widening cracks.
"Their very preliminary view was it might have something to do with construction of the building next door," he said."That building's not yet occupied. The rail engineers said that everything to do with the rail line is safe and so are the nearby unit blocks. It's just that one building.""It's not like the Opal Tower, which is relatively new and has defects," he said.
Residents evacuating the building on Friday night after receiving a letter from the building manager saying they had until 9pm to vacate the complex.The notice said the propping was designed to support the building and to halt any further deterioration, but warned residents could need to evacuate at short notice for an indefinite period.
“It is very frustrating because I own the apartment and we just bought it three months ago,” Mr Dos Santos said.“We were aware when we bought the place some work had to be done but nothing of this scale.”
So another developer/builder/certifier walks away, cash in pocket, while the residents are left holding the bag?
