HAMILTON — Signalling its determination not to be outflanked on the left this time around, the federal NDP has unveiled its platform months ahead of the fall election, including commitments to dramatically expand health care and to impose a wealth tax on the super-rich and a plan to run deficits for the foreseeable future.
The NDP pharmacare plan differs somewhat from the report released by former Ontario health minister Dr. Eric Hoskins last week, which recommended that a full pharmacare program be rolled out by 2027, at an additional cost to the federal government of $15 billion annually. The NDP is also planning to impose a new wealth tax on those worth more than $20 million — an idea recently proposed in the U.S. by Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The NDP would levy a one per cent tax on Canadians’ net worth above $20 million, which it estimates would generate “several billion dollars annually.”
The NDP platform includes a number of promises the party has been rolling out gradually in recent months, including commitments to build 500,000 units of affordable housing in the next 10 years, to create 300,000 jobs as part of a transition to a low-carbon economy and to retrofit all housing stock in Canada by 2050.

The original Medicare plan under Tommy Douglas and Premier Lloyd of SK was a universal hospitalization plan. That is why $ have been directed to acute care, and has grown since then. Sure, pharmacare, dental care and the like would be nice but Canada currently can’t fund it.
How will they cover the costs? We borrow billions every month to keep the Trudeau status quo in place.
