Developers and planners say current uptick is just the beginning as the commuter link to the GTA starts to pay dividends

Niagara housing prices are rising faster than anywhere else in Canada, and the boom looks set to continue in lockstep with improved transportation links to the GTA.

She’s not the only one excited about the new service to Stoney Creek, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, which comes with plans for more frequent trains and a new station in Grimsby. With Metrolinx estimating that Niagara’s population of about 500,000 will more than double by 2041, developers and planning authorities have great expectations for the housing market on the peninsula that extends from Grimsby in the northwest to Fort Erie in the southeast.

When Niagara GO Train service was officially announced in 2018, there was an “immediate surge” in interest around the Rosseau Group’s ambitious mixed-use expansion of the Casablanca Winery Inn in Grimsby, says Rino Mostacci, Niagara’s commissioner of planning and development services. Housing boomAnticipation of GO’s arrival and expansion is also fuelling a housing boom in Niagara Falls, says Mayor Jim Diodati, who likens GO service to “an umbilical cord plugging into Toronto’s energy.”
