The numbers of people at risk of losing their own homes and rental homes and availing of city support services is over 30%, two charities warned.
Paul Sheehan of Cork Simon, which has a 47-bed shelter along with a night shelter that sleeps 15, said: “The [rental market] availability is next to zero. He added: “And pretty much everybody who is stuck in emergency accommodation at the moment is depending on the private rental market to get out of it.“We need to look at increasing the supply there and capping rents and giving people some level of security.”
Meanwhile, Caitriona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners, who serve up to 2,000 freshly made meals every week, said many there has been a notable increase in the numbers who have seen their family homes flogged to vulture funds.
