A stopover in River Oaks, an upscale neighborhood in Houston where homes average more than 3,600 square feet

The ritzy residential area in the heart of Houston is home to expansive houses that average more than 3,600 square feetThe development of River Oaks, one of Houston’s ritziest neighborhoods, can be traced to 1924.

That’s when brothers Will and Mike Hogg, sons of a former Texas governor, started buying property surrounding the then-new River Oaks Country Club, a rural outpost west of Houston. The Hoggs, along with their business partner Hugh Potter, envisioned a residential community with strict deed restrictions on architectural standards and a private tax to support upkeep. As Houston grew, River Oaks found itself centrally-located within the Interstate 610 loop.
