Seniors are perhaps the most vulnerable to California’s rising rents and evictions of any age group. The consequences can be devastating. In 2016, 41.6% of renters 80 or older paid more than half their income on housing.

Last week, an upstart company started providing furnished apartments for business travelers on Franklin Avenue in Hollywood.

Because Contreras is at least 62, city rules allow the family up to a year to move. Kevin Contreras, a security guard in Beverly Hills who is helping his mom, dad and sister search for a new place, said they can afford rent of $1,100 a month. Landlords have told him they won’t accept more than two adults in a one-bedroom; he’s hoping someone will make an exception for his sister, who is disabled.

In non-rent-controlled buildings, landlords can raise the rent as high as they want and can usually tell long-term tenants to leave in 60 days, as long as doing so wouldn’t break a lease. Richard Green, director of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate, said gentrification was being driven by supply and demand. Higher-income individuals increasingly want to live in urban centers. An underlying shortage of housing kicks off a chain reaction, pricing middle-class households out of wealthier areas and forcing those people to seek homes in more affordable neighborhoods.

CA will be the first state to collapse under its own statist weight.

😥

This is a crime against humanity. In the richest nation on earth. But apparently our humanity is deeply impoverished.

You think? I moved my mom from California after living there for over 60 years.

Is CA too poor to build housing? Is it poor or cheap?

california sucks

Democrab took advantage of the none paper immigrants, the kids if the immigrants and now target on elderly? Don’t pretend you care, your people cut down the state benefits from them included medications. Housing waiting years for them.

I’m a Senior Citizen who almost died at KeckMedUSC due to complications from a cut IVC during my Spine Surgery by Dr John C. Liu. I am a disabled Widowed Senior, I trusted Risk Mgmt to compensate me. They refused to pay me due to timing. This was Senior Abuse and no one helps.

And this is one of the myriad reasons I left CA as quickly as possible!

Mind boggling how Demtard voters dont make the connection that a Democrap super majority is THE VERY REASON gentrification, homelessness, and rising living costs are gutting lower income families, the vast majority being the black and brown people they claim to 'protect'...

Proofread please. This post is like from some drunk person who’s very careless.

Keep voting democRATS

Most Californian officials have completely sold out Americans. Look at their fvcking streets. I’d be embarrassed to live there. And I’m from Wilmington DE this place s shithole because of democrat control and Cali 1000x worse. Delaware heading in same direction tho along with....

Unfortunately the attitude in America towards seniors is for them to hurry up and die. Nobody cares. It's pathetic

How do you live 80 years and not secure housing by ownership? Crazy. Yes I knownits cali but come on.

right! so when do we stop the debt spending? hmm?

Need a revised Proposition 13. It kept rents in control over greedy property owners.

Newsom and top California lawmakers strike a deal to cap rent increasesBreaking: Millions of Californians would receive new protections against large rent increases under an agreement announced late Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders. What kind of protection is that? A free tent? Laws like this only make things worse for renters. CA is being run by complete morons. Awesome! Let’s do even more to de-incentivize real estate developers from building new homes! That should help the housing shortage.
