Renters could get chance to buy from their landlords under Labour plan

Millions of private tenants could be given the chance to buy their rented home at a discounted price under a radical ‘right to buy’ scheme if Labour wins the next election, the party said.

He added that the party wants to target landlords who let their properties fall into disrepair at the expense of their tenants and the community. He said: ‘You’d want to establish what is a reasonable price, you can establish that and then that becomes the right to buy. You set the criteria. I don’t think it’s complicated.’The British politician added that the policy, first suggested by Jeremy Corbyn during his 2015 bid for leadership, would be a way of stopping landlords making a ‘fast buck’ at the cost of their tenants.

But critics argue Thatcher’s policy was responsible for the current housing crisis by creating a massive social housing shortage for low income families, initiating a housing price bubble and leading to gentrification of traditional communities.In his interview, Mr McDonnell also revealed Labour’s plans for a share transferal proposal, under which the government would confiscate £300 billion of shares in 7,000 large companies and give them to the workers.
