Video shows waves crashing into homes and ruined cars strewn about the streets of the Bahamas. One resident filmed furniture and other items floating inside their flooded house.

Dorian was downgraded to a Category 3 storm early Tuesday with maximum sustained winds of about 120 mph. As of 8 a.m. it was moving northwest at a speed of about 1 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Minnis said that images and videos seen by officials are heartbreaking, with many homes and businesses and other buildings completely or partially destroyed.

The storm was forecast to travel"dangerously close" to the Florida east coast late Tuesday through Wednesday evening, the center said. It would then move"very near" the Georgia and South Carolina coasts Wednesday night and Thursday, and near or over the North Carolina coast late Thursday, the center added.The hurricane was moving northwest toward the U.S. from the Bahamas at a slow pace of 1 mph as of 8 a.m.
