More than 12,000 new homes could be built on some of the most flood-prone areas of England.

More than 12,000 new homes could be built on some of the most flood-prone areas of England, a Greenpeace investigation has found.

The Greenpeace study selected the 10 English councils with the highest percentage of land covered by high-risk areas using the Environment Agency's map.It then plotted these against sites that the councils listed in their five-year plans for housing supply. The work found that, as well as hundreds of new homes in high-risk areas of these towns, thousands of homes are planned for medium-risk zones.

The Environment Agency told the BBC that local planning authorities are responsible for approving proposals for new development in their areas.

So they'd be arks then.

Thousands already have been.

That sounds like a good plan - NOT!!

Brilliant

Yep. Thats what Labour councils do. They are building disaster zones. They are a disaster!

More people means more houses, more houses more flooding

And which elected officials have been bribed to allow that? Totally nuts.

When buying the most expensive thing in your life, do people not do a bit of research. My solicitor did various checks but I also did my own. Live near a river so checked flooding history. Known subsidence in the town so again I check that.

Apparently Doncaster Council is building a Hardour at Fishlake by the Sea and the local community will be able to buy fishing boats to moor at the Harbour and do daytrips to Skegness.

No buildings should be built on these areas, they're there for a purpose. The planning laws should not have been relaxed.

Well that makes perfect sense doesn't it?

The law needs to be changed to ban Housing developers building on flood zones !

We need better drainage for storm waters. It would help if we had separate lines for sewage and rain water so flood waters don't bring sewage out. Massive restructuring and investment needed.

Good luck getting insurance cover

And people still continue to buy them

This is not just silly it's downright criminal. Will the owners, when selling the property advertise, area will flood during adverse weather conditions. Warning, home insurance may be difficult buy. Or offer a boet with every sale?

Houses you won’t get insurance for

Haha omggg

populationcrisis

Hope there all on big poles ☔☔🐟

sounds logical 🤔

Unbelievable

Good planning decisions on show here, built on stilts I presume. Good idea.

Seems like a smart idea.

Thousands MORE, this is what the UK does. Also, LibDems are NOT spending money on climatechange but on combating climatechange

So what ? Nobody is forced to buy them and if they do Boris will pay a morale boosting visit 3 days after the first downpour

There is nothing forcing people to buy homes in these areas. Research and avoid.

Most of the disasters which affect ordinary UK people in their daily lives are man-made - through sheer folly and neglect. No money available from tax buckets? Then stop £billions being squandered on pie-in-sky projects and associated buddy-pal consultants; ASAP!

Yes! 415 to be built high up in Matlock and connected into an already overloaded infrastructure! Not for just drainage! Everything! Matlock derbyshirefloods

Nothing to do with immigration 🙄

Makes sense

And when insurance companies refuse to insure them or charge huge premiums they will be accused of being crooks!!

🤬why is this still being allowed!!!

They’re building houses on an area called The Flood Meadows near where I live .... bonkers! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Then blame climate change when the flood plain floods..........

Make sure the Environment Agency dose it job in water management and stop using Climate Change as a excuse Many if not all have suffered flooding for 50-100yrs or more It’s proper water management If they don’t know how ask the Dutch

Great idea

All homes built on flood plains should have to be flood resistant. With sealed drainage & non return valves. Tanked ground floors & high level electrical installations. Make the builders responsible for making the houses flood resistant & including a flood recovery scheme.

Smart

Planning authorities should be held accountable. Building on flood plains is criminal negligence.

News flash 2021: thousands of new homes built on flood planes in 2020 are now flooded. Nostradamus would be proud

I was born in an area of my town known as Birds Marsh on which now they are building hundreds of new houses , some have subsided I wonder why 😞

They built some house near where I live my dad said they regret building those houses there why someone aked the clues in the name of the where they've built them Marsh lane 4 years later we had a wet spring all the new houses had their own moats. 🤔

what a very good idea

📰 that isn't an issue just build them on stilts

Already doing it?

How?, by whom? when?
