'The show often feels like a desperate scramble,' writes V.F. critic rilaws. 'Throwing a lot of familiar ingredients together, wrapping them in the cover of trusted I.P.'

plays Ricky, a skateboarder who kinda sorta dumped his girlfriend, Nini , after she told him she loved him over summer break. When their junior year starts, Ricky wants Nini back, but Nini met a new boy at theater camp, enlightened basketball jocktheater star EJ . Nini and EJ have aims on scoring the lead roles in their school’s upcoming production of, so Ricky decides to audition too, in the hopes of getting in between his ex and her new beau.

The new song is perhaps the most glaring example of the show’s market-tested design, appealing in an obvious way, but existing merely to check a recent-trend box. I wonder if young audiences will feel pandered to by. My guess is the show’s fans will be a bit younger than teenagers, at an age when it’s less clear what’s authentically of its era and what’s only sold as such.
