State Investment, Industrial and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said it was possible with the latest technology available.
Mohammad Nizar said the 2km runway could be extended in the direction of Pasir Pinji for another 500m across a nearby river, turning LTSAS into a regional airport. “We have referred to other similar airports and with the latest tech, we can build over Sungai Pinji. Technicians say it can be done easily.
“We have discussed with the Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd , Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia to find the best solution to the matter, ” he said when replying to Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir during the question and answer session at the state assembly sitting on Monday . “I am not saying that it will not affect homes and land but we want to minimise the impact as much as possible, ” he said, adding that further technical studies would be conducted.“It’s better than the option of extending the runway towards the other end as it involved a larger housing area, ” he added.
