Treasurer Jim Chalmers has delivered a major spray at the Greens and a first-term MP after the minor party voted to delay legislation which aimed to create thousands of new homes.Treasurer Jim Chalmers has unleashed on the Greens, claiming Griffith MP Max Chandler-Mather had"a lot of nerve" for arguing the government was failing to address housing affordability after the minor party voted down legislation that aimed to create thousands of new homes.

After the Coalition and the Greens voted to delay the legislation, it will now go to a Senate inquiry which will report back by September 4. "The member for Griffith has got a lot of nerve asking this question today, having just teamed up in the Senate with the Coalition, with the conservatives, to knock off tens of thousands of rental properties to help fix the problem that we have with housing supply in this country," he declared.

"If you really gave a stuff about homelessness in this country, you would vote for the policies that would build more housing supply in this country and you wouldn't conduct this ridiculous, underhanded, hypocritical campaign, which sees you vote more frequently with them than with us, to build the homes that you pretend you want to see in our local communities."

Mr Chalmers branded the Greens' housing spokesman"ridiculous" for demanding action only for the minor party to vote against it.
