Plans to cut back on retirement services provided by North Lanarkshire Council has been blasted by relatives.
During a meeting at Mission Place, hosted by Trust, residents and relatives expressed dismay, alarm and disappointment at the council’s proposal to remove Trust’s funding, given how highly valued that location and the staff are having been in service for the past 17 years. “This proposal will increase the risk of falls and self-neglect for frail elderly tenants. It will almost certainly see the end of the meal services at Bellshill and Motherwell, and the social events which follow meals will stop as no staff members will be there to escort tenants to and from the dining room.
She continued: “It’s vital that North Lanarkshire tenants have the right to decide who delivers their care and support in a way that best meets their individual needs. This empowers tenants to make their own decisions and to have their personal needs addressed rather than as part of a larger group. “The social landlords are responsible for planning how they can optimise their income, which includes money from rents, service charges and charges from the provision of meals, where these are provided. We will work closely with them, where appropriate, to consider how their service is structured in future.
