Habitat is a critical part of building affordable housing.Those of us who have followed the hard struggle to build affordable housing in Dallas know well how strong an organization that Habitat for Humanity once was in this city.
In parts of Dallas where city-sponsored community housing development organizations showed little progress in actually creating many new homes, Habitat would reliably pour foundations, put up frames and hand over the keys to people who needed them, offering dignity and equity in neat little brick packages.We were unaware of just how badly Habitat had declined in recent years until we read an investigative report from our newsroom colleague Sue Ambrose.
All this said, we know that it hasn’t gotten any easier to build affordable homes in Dallas. Everything is more expensive, from land to materials to labor. And there is almost always resistance to construction. Habitat faces this more acutely than many organizations because it is a well-recognized brand with a well-recognized product. Habitat homes are distinct by design.
Dallas City Hall needs to do all it can to ensure that a nonprofit that has had a history of being a good partner is getting excellent service, and not the sort of bad information and misdirection that Ambrose documents.We believe in Habitat for Humanity as an organization that has delivered quality homes for people who otherwise would have never had the chance to own their roof and walls.We know that it can be as great as it once was.
