Townsville's housing market had been recovering after years of turmoil — now coronavirus is scaring off up to 70 per cent of potential buyers.

Kim Hendy and Ken Maynard had not stepped foot inside their new house before they packed up and drove 15 hours to pick up the keys.New homeowners say you can buy a house online with inspections carried out over the phoneThe Real Estate Institute of Queensland predicts house prices will recover"quite quickly"

"The pandemic wasn't on when we decided to move — it just all happened within three weeks," Ms Hendy said. The couple could not find flights from Brisbane to Townsville to inspect the property in person, so they organised a virtual inspection with their real estate agent via video call. "She spent half an hour walking around opening up cupboards and doors and showing us around the yard — there were no surprises when we came here," Mr Maynard said.

"Don't let the virus stop you from buying a house — you can do it all online, you can do it on your phone."

Absolutely, as long as the banks were lending and we kept our jobs. It's a massive opportunity to negotiate due to a volatile immediate future. Both vendor and buyer, maybe an opportunity to get out early for the vendor, equally an opportunity to get a bargain for the buyer

No I'll wait for the property market to crash because of the shutdown and subsequent economic failure

Housing prices are going to drop even further

No

Never ever! Just the thought of desanitising another place will drive me crazy.

No, because I can't afford it still thanks to 30 years of a government funded private asset class.

Only if you have this tattoo'd on our forehead..

If I could get a loan, which will be very hard

Not if I didn’t want to lose 10-40%

ABC breaking news---houses in Australia can contract Covid19 too. 😁

At the moment prices are still stubbornly high and agents are playing hardball as they’d rather wait out this crisis than lower prices. I will consider if we see prices go down 20%-30% otherwise no thanks

No

Absolutely

I mean, seriously … The ABC obviously has way too many staffers with nothing much to do.

Yeah, if I won the lotto.

Nope

Yes. Actively trying. Have watched in despair as several times over our family (with kids) and others were outbid by investors who flipped it right round to rent after. I hope they all lose their shirts the money grubbing shits.

Would you buy toilet paper during the coronavirus pandemic? Would you pay $20 for a single roll of toilet paper during the coronavirus pandemic? See how the answer changes depending on one subtle though neglected aspect of the question?

How's the market in Wuhan?

Yes I would, the market will not drop 20% some places like Sydney and Melbourne already inflated prices will see 10-15% at most. Government and banks will not allow any more as too many will default and banks can not recover money.. good time to buy now.

It'll take alot more than coronavirus before I could afford a house that I'd own before I'm dead.

Wait for the fire sales.

Oh houses look affordable in Townsville 😳 FionaLakeAus

Prices starting to look pretty attractive.. Hold off a bit

Yes. On another planet though.

Not sure I'd be selling. Nice time to watch as the investment crowd start folding.

Yep

Not for what they think it is worth... 6 months time and you can get a house for 10-20% less than what they were asking pre Conrona virus

Fuck NO!
