Muhammad Al-Awad, who lives in one of Melbourne's public housing towers, was out shopping when he learnt about the 'hard lockdown' order. It was the last time he would step outside his front door for at least five days

Living alone and already in vulnerable to COVID-19 due to his diabetes, Mr Al-Awad has spent the last few months vigilantly sanitising and limiting time outside to stay safe.

As it began to rain, the returning residents were met by police at the front door of the building. Many already knew that once they stepped inside, they would not be allowed out again for at least five days.Ali Muhammad arrived home with a trolley full of groceries. "I'm feeling very sad, because we can't get out of here, we're locked up, it's like a prison," he said.Ashleigh McMillan

They look a little like a who's who of Third World slums.

Has to be done. Stop whining!

If you just listened from the health department and did the right thing like social distancing, stayed at home and practiced hand hygiene, thus shoudn’t happen.

I do not understand what's the big deal with five days lock down. It's only five days! Five effing days! Get real ffs! Just stay put, do your part, and we'll be out of it before you even blink. Get tested, get cured, and stay healthy. Social Distancing is the new normal!

For those in lockdown... this is because you thought that the laws and public safety requirements were only for others and not you. Brought in on yourselves

Why only 5 days not 14 like other lockdowns ?

elizapublishing AND !!! is this now a Murdoch outlet ?

1st world problems. Stay on the sofa and watch Netflix.

Spare a thought for the residents of all the other postcodes locked down. The ones who don't have a guaranteed public housing roof over their heads, the ones who still have to pay their bills and taxes.

It’s a necessary exercise. This virus does not discriminate! And is extremely contagious. We must start taking it seriously! Wash your hands! Social distance and take a deep breath! One night down. Four to go!

Don't care just stfu and stay home

THIS IS RIDICULOUS YET THE AGE KEEP SUPPORTING THIS SHIT.

I wonder how many of the African flats were at the blacklivesmatteraustralia rally three weeks ago? I wonder how many celebrated Eid in groups in defiance of restrictions? More than a coincidence don’t you think?

5 days is nothing, try those locked down in nursing homes without family visitors for months?

To be honest, it’s the least they can do after impacting a whole suburb in Kensington, no outbreak yet we’re in lockdown.

Boo hoo. Stay home, wash your hands and watch your money grow courtesy of the taxpayers. We could always stick a bomb in the basement if your homesick.

For those who are in lockdown. Please be assured all Australians will thank you for taking it tough. Sorry for the inconvenience, but pls let’s work together & get Australia 🇦🇺 out of the coronavirus threats. Hearty thanks.

$117k raised after Melbourne apartment blocks sent into immediate lockdownNine public housing towers across two Melbourne suburbs have been placed under immediate lockdown, amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak. 9News Whole thing is ridiculous. It is absolutely POINTLESS trying to lock down a rapidly increasing number of individual suburbs, each having large numbers of routes of ingress and egress. There is NO VACCINE and 99.99% NON-IMMUNITY, so we can NOT suppress this virus indefinitely.

Rent waived for 3,000 Melbourne public housing tenants under hard lockdownVictoria records another 74 new coronavirus cases overnight as Premier Daniel Andrews announces the tenants of nine public housing towers placed under hard lockdown will not have to pay rent for two weeks. They probably never pay their rent anyway. Question for the ABC. I agree both premiers are responsible for each debacle, but during the Ruby Princess debacle, most of the story photos were oh the cruise ship and not of GladysB . Why are you only showing pictures of DanielAndrewsMP here? Is this not a form of media bias? Stands to reason not to charge rent. Prisoners aren’t expected to pay rent.

Victoria reports 108 new coronavirus cases, as 'hard lockdown' announced for nine public housing towersVictorian Premier Daniel Andrews says the concern is that the 'virus can spread like wildfire' in large apartment blocks that have now emerged as new clusters in the state. Daniel Andrews is now locking people in their apartments CCP style. Any reasonable person must see how that this is out of control authoritarianism that should have no place in our society. They are still allowed to travel to work though. (Not ppl from public housing) It’s going to spread further than those postcodes for sure. Lock the state down again. Victorians are proving a selfish lot disregarding the lockdowns, travelling interstate sick, and 10000 refusing the tests. Time to just lock it down again.
