Shocked advocates say the Northern Territory Government's decision to appeal a landmark housing ruling that was set to improve conditions in remote housing in the Territory is 'appalling'.

The NT Government will appeal a landmark Supreme Court ruling that advocates say had the potential to transform remote housing in the Northern Territory.

"I think it's truly appalling the NT Government is seeking to appeal a legal standard that would protect its own residents."In the landmark September ruling, Supreme Court Justice Jenny Blokland made a judgment clearly outlining the conditions that the Government is obliged to provide remote community renters, saying in her comments:

"The learned judge erred in construing section 48 of the Residential Tenancies Act by holding that "habitable" requires an overall assessment of humaneness, suitability and reasonable comfort of the premises judged against contemporary standards." "We need to let the legal process run its course. However, this case was brought in response to extreme neglect of remote housing under the CLP," he said."In Santa Teresa we have upgraded 93 out of 99 homes. We have built seven new homes with more planned," he said.
