Childcare 'costs more than my mortgage'. Here's why it's hurting everybody

Kate Olivieri and her husband know only too well the cost of child care in Australia.Caps on the childcare rebate, loss of family benefits and the tax system mean that some "second earners" would be working for nothing on a fifth day

Many of these analysts are disappointed that the Budget did not include measures to reduce childcare costs The Lismore-based mother and her husband pay $500 a fortnight in childcare fees, after rebates, for their son Albert. "We actually did some sums and worked out that after paying five days of child care … we worked out that will be only $24 a fortnight better off," she said.

Child care is expensive because it is over regulated. Want cheaper child care, deregulate it. Simple.

Don’t have children if you are not prepared to pay for them.

One for mum, then dad, third child for the country. During these TIME where it makes no economic sense. LNP idealogical companion to ecocide. Inherent ecocidal touch, greatest fault line in human natures history. GretaThunberg they baby bonus, then impost every day forward

No one forced you to have kids. Why should I subsidise you ?

There are over a million unemployed persons most of whom would have the necessary skills to fill the vacancies of mothers that are whingeing about the cost of child care & resent paying for it. Those unemployed filling that mothers position would increase productivity even more.

Its become a terrible norm in society to dump children under 5 into the hands of strangers at a day care centre 40 hours a week. Why have children if that's what you intend doing with them?

Everybody knows its a big responsibility having children, e.body ought to be aware the first 5yrs of a childs life are their most important formative years&best spent in the loving nurturing care of their mother E.body knows people rationalise any&everything to suit their agenda

There's no labor shortage. Why the do we need more taxpayer funded childcare.

I have children of my own to support, I shouldn’t have to support your children too. you should make better life choices

I'm only here for the comments by wannabe muppets saying they don't want to pay for other people's kids As usual, I have not been disappointed

'Everybody'?! Really?

I spent a few years working in childcare across several centres including agency work. The industry is rife with wannabe entrepreneur private owners in it for a quick fortune while workers flounder on minimum wage or less. The price per day of childcare is obscene.

If you select to have a child, budget for them.

Shoulda thought of that before you decided to breed.

Why is child care a tax payers issue? Stay at home and look after your kids if that is the choice you made.

Childcare 'costs more than my mortgage'Australian workers, mainly women, suffer from perverse tax disincentives when they pay for childcare. For many they're not just copping a higher rate of tax than our highest-paid corporate titans, they're paying to go to work. How have you not tweeted about the MurdochRoyalCommission yet? It runs for maximum five years per kid though where mortgage normally last for thirty Would a live-in nanny actually be cheaper?
