In Quilpie, Australia, officials are giving away grants equivalent to the price of a plot of land if new residents build a new home. Could this work in Toronto to ease a housing market crisis?

Ever see a neat project in another city and wonder: could we do it here? Should we? We have too, and as part of an ongoing series we’ll be taking ideas from around the world and running them through the lens of Toronto.

The buzz generated half a world away raises a question here: could free, or heavily discounted land, in more rural areas be a success in Ontario? And who would really benefit from those programs — would it help big cities such as Toronto as they struggle with housing supply? Or would the benefits be concentrated on any smaller towns receiving the extra residents?

Luc Denault, the town’s director of economic development, told the Star new residents had come from other northern towns, but also bigger cities such as Ottawa and Toronto. To him, the project has been a success. David Amborski, an urban planning expert at Ryerson University, said even if the incentives were replicated in a host of small towns, he doesn’t expect any sizable impact on the GTA.

Local real estate agents claimed at the time that there had been a notable surge of people from the GTA. Data collected by Statistics Canada shows Toronto saw a record number of residents leave from July 1, 2019 to July 1, 2020, a period that includes the initial months of the pandemic. That exodus, it said, was mainly driven by moves to nearby areas such as Oshawa.

If you moved everyone from toronto that cannot comfortably cover their bills. Torontos population will become 0.

Maybe if we didnt have foreigners buying up our properties and jacking the prices up so Canadians cant afford to live anywhere so they can then fly their families over and give them the houses our people built we wouldnt even need to think of ideas like this.

This wouldnt work anywhere in Canada cause Liberals would creep in and fuck it all up and find a way to make the rent skyrocket.

Ah yes, equate the policies for a town of less than 1,000 people in the middle of nowhere, to a major metropolis with a population in the millions. Gotta love “journalism” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
