Over 500 old convents, hotels and other commercial buildings are being assessed to see if they could be used to house Ukrainian refugees, according to the Housing Minister.this morning, Darragh O’Brien said a cap on the amount of refugees Ireland will accept is “off the table”.
He said the government is also considering a system of payments for families who agree to take refugees into their own homes.Meanwhile, Cabinet will tomorrow be asked to approve updates to the Fair Deal scheme which could see up to 8,000 empty homes brought back into the rental market. Minister O’Brien told Ciara that the Ukraine refugee crisis was always going to be challenge – but there is no prospect of limiting the amount of people Ireland will accept.“We have been very clear through the Taoiseach that Government has made a decision on behalf of the Irish people that those fleeing this terrible attack and war in Ukraine, vested upon them through no fault of their own by Putin and by Russia, will be given safe harbour and refuge here in Ireland.

We have been generous and people have helped in so many ways but It is wrong to take in people we simply can't look after. We are further alienating our citizens who are already struggling. By all means continue to provide aid but we must cap the numbers.

Then you have to renovate your way out of this problem. Restore derelicted houses is a benefit all around instead of listening to developers and vulture funds. Insulate and make habitable all over Ireland for free. It has to be cheaper in the long run.

The Temporary Protection Directive from 2001 allowed a cap be applied according to the EU with countries having the option also to determine if the scene w could be extended based on the war continuing after a year So why are the Irish govt not putting a cap in Place?
Not very wise, having no suitable accommodation for women and children, over burdening an already in crisis system and for years to come the blame will br laid squarely at our over generosity. If its not fir for habitation by Irish its not good enough for our Ukraine friends.
Anyone who believes politicians actually care about refugees needs a reality check. Our de facto open borders policy serves only to increase house prices and rent, and to keep wages low for their corporate interests.
