The state government is cracking down on privately run disability homes in Victoria, closing one after findings of bullying, coercion and abuse of residents and warning all facilities that the strongest possible action will be taken to tackle neglect.
In September 2020, the Victorian government placed another supported residential facility – Hambleton House in Albert Park – into administration after a COVID-19 outbreak revealed shocking conditions, including uncapped needles, mattresses stained with bodily fluids, broken windows and spoiled food.revealed the government had been repeatedly warned over years about conditions at Hambleton House.There are 117 supported residential services in Victoria.
The administrator, Ernst and Young, will continue to operate Gracemanor until residents have been moved to other accommodation. It now seems inevitable that Sydenham Grace will also close.with rival disability providers over the right to access residents’ lucrative NDIS funding packages, with allegations of abuse and residents being moved in the middle of the night.
She alleged that departmental staff were co-operating with her industry competitors to “poach” residents. The man had been very unwell in the days before his death, according to Mental Health Legal Service chief executive Charlotte Jones, who said concerns had been raised by multiple professionals. The state government has pledged to establish a new social services regulator with stronger powers to crack down on supported residential services.
