TORONTO - Seniors and advocates are terrified and livid over Ontario’s move to allow hospitals to send patients into long-term care homes not of their choosing.
The new bill focuses on patients who are well enough to leave a hospital to an “alternate level of care.” If passed, the legislation would allow “certain actions to be carried out without the consent of these patients.” “The changes do allow us to continue that conversation to explain to somebody who is in a hospital why their needs can be met in a long-term care home,” he said.
Meadus said the only appeal process mentioned in the bill is if a patient is deemed ineligible for long-term care. Vivian Stamatopoulos, a long-term care researcher and advocate at Ontario Tech University, was outraged by the bill, particularly that people could be moved to homes far away from their loved ones.The majority of residents in long-term care have dementia, Stamatopoulos said, so their caregivers become substitute decision makers and powers of authority.
Serious question: Why would a senior who is receiving excellent (and free) bedside care in a city hospital with lots of doctors and nurses present be anxious to transition to a long-term care home? I'd stay in hospital as long as I could.

What's so great about waiting for weeks and months in a hospital? They go where there is room available to them. Our hospitals are slammed as it is. Unless they need medical attention or adjustments to their meds they shouldn't be in hospital. Keep your family at home for as long as possible.

Akin to China sending Covid patients to quarantine camps. ComradeFord CTV needs to ratchet down the rhetoric. Hospitals were doing transfers to LTC home regardless of location in 2012. If you didn’t accept the LTC homes, then it was up to my Dad or family to pay the hospital fees. This has been going on for years & not fixed by Liberals or NDP!!! They know where they need to live and this is usually weighed in thought and choice by proximity to family and if not family, proximity to a neighbourhood community that is already their own, or once upon their own during their younger lives.
