Tory’s plan includes allowing more mid-range developments of four units or less on major roads and in areas served by transit, as well as the creation of a new division to streamline the building process.

The plan would also see the city enact a so-called “use it or lose it” policy for developers sitting on approved but undeveloped land, which would see them pay higher taxes or have their zoning approvals expire after a certain timeframe.

At the announcement this morning, Tory said he wants to help young Torontonians have a chance to live in the neighbourhoods where they grew up and senior residents stay in their areas when they decide to downsize. House prices in Ontario nearly tripled in the last 10 years, far outpacing income growth, a government-commissioned task force report said last year. The province is also 1.2 million homes -- both rental and owned -- short of the G7 average.

Earlier this month, Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark introduced legislation that would give the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa veto powers over bylaws that conflict with provincial priorities, such as building housing. Premier Doug Ford has said the so-called “strong mayor” powers would be expanded to other municipalities. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 23, 2022.

Quite shameless. He's had eight years to 'tackle housing shortage,' or anything else.

will JohnTory take care of snow like this for all of us? it would help seniors, as well as those with mobility issues, and everyone else. will JohnTory make sure that storm drains, sewer drains, storm sewers, and sewers clean daily spring to fall?

will JohnTory replace street lights and intersection signal lights with LED lights? will he have LED lighting replace current lighting in all city builds and parks? will he have solar and wind power street lights & intersection signal lights?

what is JohnTory going to do about bring back TorontoTheClean? what is he going to lower wait time for TTC vehicles to under 3 minutes year round? what is he going to do about heat islands around Toronto? will he be planting more trees around Toronto and having them maintained?

He has been promising this since before his very first campaign. He keeps trotting it out every time he runs for mayor, but in office he’s doing the minimum. This is the third time. As they say, fool us once shame on him. Fool us three times… JohnTory

So much B.S., Taking a page out of Trudeau’s book. I’ll do this, I’ll do that, oops I forgot.

Who the hell would vote for this knucklehead again?!?!

Yeah the son of a famous, wealthy hob nobbin lawyer, who has done nothing to address inequity, anf actually attacked protestors fighting for said housing… is NOT going to change his stripes. He still hasn’t resigned from rogers

He is a liar been said that on the last election and did nothing

And I can fly without wings. John Tory is one of Toronto's most useless mayors but, because Toronto is in Ontario that qualifies for reelection.

'Do nothing' JohnTory waited 8 years to wake up... Wow! TOpoli

What happened to the 8 years he was in office? But, this time for sure. ;)

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA RIGHT!

Wasn’t there a housing shortage that pre-dated Tory’s first term?

Vote very carefully now that he has been given extra power by fordnation.

All I remember is him having the homeless 'cleaned' out of a park in a very disrespectful way.

Where does a mayor have any authority as regards to housing? Another scheme to expropriate land's? You need money and land to tackle housing shortage! With rent controls then kiss it good-by!

'There are more than a million empty homes in Canada and on any given night at least 35,000 Canadians are homeless.'

SmartHouse?

He’s had 8 friggin years do something. Let’s be frank, what has he done that you can remember. Had a conflict with Rogers, delayed opening of union station and the crosstown, still building out in the streets and causing traffic chaos downtown.

OK, but has the Rogers family signed off on it too? Pretty sure he needs to get approval from his bosses on something like this.

Hes had 8years to do this. And for 8 years he's talked and talked and talked about doing it. And did nothing. Not a thing.

Is he our mayor? I though the city was abandoned.

Too little FAR too late. Toronto badly needs a change in leadership

He will use his democratic veto to get it done

dont worry, he wont be

He just hasn’t had time yet. Too busy! Give him another 4 years and he thinks he’ll get around to it, probably.

Just like he’s tackled…absolutely nothing…in his two terms to date?

Fake promises before elections. That's what politicians do. He had his chances. buh bye Tory.

BULLSHIT! these empty promises are just that- empty! He has been mayor for how long? and now he thinks he can re-brand himself as somehow being outside of the very problem that he and his enablers have in large part been solely responsible for creating in the first place?

LMAO

it's the urgency that i find most convincing

why didn't he do it when he was mayor?
