Housing campaigners in Birmingham fear the next death caused by unsafe public housing could happen in the city. The quality of accommodation offered to society’s most vulnerable is under scrutiny after the death of Awaab Ishak.

According to campaigners, another family with a young child suffering from a lung condition faced being removed from the housing list when they turned down a mouldy flat. ‘Like Awaab’s family, families in Birmingham are being blamed by social housing providers for causing mould in their homes. One third of respondents to a survey conducted by housing charity Shelter about the state or private rental properties found a third had experienced damp or mould.was removed from his £170,000 post as head of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing at the weekendAwaab Ishak died from a lung condition aggravated by the state of the social housing he was living in
