BRUCE'S BEACH: After winning lengthy legal battle to reclaim land, family selling coastal property in Manhattan Beach back to LA County for $20 million

Charles and Willa Bruce purchased the land in 1912 and operated a resort for Black residents until the city of Manhattan Beach condemned the property under a false pretense of developing a park. Instead, the property sat vacant for years after the Bruces and other Black families were evicted from the area.

The family this week opted to make that $20 million sale. In an appearance Tuesday on the Tavis Smiley talk show on KBLA radio, Bruce family attorney George Fatheree said a variety of factors played into the decision to sell the land back to the county. The attorney called the decision to sell the land "a positive development" giving the family members immediate access to financial resources that had long been denied them.

Willa and Charles Bruce purchased their land in 1912 for $1,225. They eventually added some other parcels and created a beach resort catering to Black residents, who had few options at the time for enjoying the California coast.

First thought is that feels awful low.

First thought is that feels awful low.

I wonder how many descendants got a piece of the pie? The article mentions just 2 in Marcus and Derrick Bruce. But later on makes it sound like way more people. It'd be interesting to see why they came to this conclusion.

Riiiiiight!!!!! Taxpayers have raised eyebrows about that. County supervisors

okay great now do San Pedro for the Japanese

After that long ass fight turn right around and flip it?

black people so disappointing

sounds like someone did the math regarding the annual tax fees for owning that beach... makes since to get rid of that debt quick!- aka the ultimate 'Flip' in todays market...

Just?

20 mil. That's no a lot.

Cope. The city just scammed everyone.

That property is worth twice that.

Is anyone surprised? The city paid again for something it already bought, from people who didn’t own it.

There is more to this story than what is told. They fought for years to get this land and turn around and sell it back? Naw there is more to this story. Force to sell it back sounds about right.

See now why this was NEVER about “stripped away” land…They movin on up…

Janice Hahn is pure trash and NOBODY should follow anything California does because none of it works the way they claim it will. It is always a scam with big $$$ involved. The new scam for 2023 will be 'reparations'

That’s greed

I guess they didn’t want the land that much. Sketchy

they always wanted the $ as would I

What about the other families? There was more than one…🧐

stupid as hell to sell the land.

If this is true, I'm kinda getting that feeling of 'treason' that it wasn't sold to FBA's. I'm non-FBA.

This what scammers look like an they are inside the government agencies at all levels from the white house through congress down to local agencies. Of thieves and Crooks of are tax money 💰. Sad.

Fraud much?

Sounds fishy.

Clearly someone in this family is being held for ransom or their life has been threatened for such to happen. All these years & all the battling to get back a birthright & they are selling it back cheap? Where are the real investigative journalists?

They’re getting ripped off again.

The county got off cheap. I’m happy for the family, though.

Only $20M? They got fleeced.

Bruce family to sell its Bruce's Beach property back to LA County for $20 million'They (the Bruce family) feel what is best for them is selling this property back to the County for nearly $20 million and finally rebuilding the generational wealth they were denied for nearly a century. This is what reparations look like and it is a model that I hope governments across the country will follow,' said Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors chair, in a written statement. People forget, you're not allowed to buy beach property now in LAC. If you own one, you can only sell it back to the county. Wow. Reparations. Btw, 20 mil ain’t shit for that property. I guess they saw the annual property tax bill.

Family to sell Bruce's Beach property back to L.A. County for nearly $20 millionCounty officials say the Bruce family has agreed to sell the Bruce's Beach property in Manhattan Beach back to Los Angeles County for nearly $20 million. And turn it into affordable housing land. If Manhattan beach residents complain tell them to shut up, cause at least the Bruce family did their part to help where they haven't. What was the Bruce family paid back when the property was condemned? What was its actual fair market value then? This sets a bad precedent. What if that were a home and YOU owned it? Does this mean you get your house stolen from you when you had nothing to do with the original incident? And what about those who have had their home stolen due to 'eminent domain'?
