Ontario’s integrity commissioner says he will investigate a complaint against Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark and his decision to open the protected Greenbelt to housing development.

Incoming NDP Leader Marit Stiles asked the commissioner to look into what she calls the “curious timing of recent purchases of Greenbelt land by powerful landowners with donor and political ties to the Ontario PC Party.” Stiles asked the integrity commissioner to investigate whether Clark broke ethics rules around making a public policy decision to further someone’s private interests.

“I am relieved to see that this matter is being treated with the seriousness that it deserves and pleased to see this response from the Integrity Commissioner and the Auditor General,” said Stiles. “Ontarians are owed answers about the Greenbelt, and I am confident that today is a step in the right direction to understanding what happened. I am hopeful that Ontarians will be able to get answers in a thorough, timely manner because of these investigations.

Ontario integrity commissioner to investigate whether government tipped off Greenbelt developersThe Ontario Integrity Commissioner will open an investigation into whether the province’s housing minister tipped off developers ahead of revealing their plans to open up the Greenbelt. Who cares, it’s only a small fine, just ask Justin. What about environmentalists that get tipped off about projects and destroy 1000s of jobs? Might find no evidence. The fact they bought land that was undevelpable shortly before change in policy is obvious that we’re tipped. Not necessarily by politicians but someone who had access to information about upcoming policy.
