The state Department of Commerce estimates Washington needs to build an additional 1 million homes over the next couple of decades or more to keep pace with population growth.

States have increasingly overridden municipal rules as populations grow. Oregon eliminated single-family zoning in 2019, and California largely did the same in 2021.

This year, the group is working to shape the bill by excluding the smallest cities and towns from the legislation and on other tweaks toward “a more nuanced approach,” Carl Schroeder, the group’s deputy director of government relations, said. In Seattle, most residential areas allow at least three units per lot with significant restrictions following a 2019 change. Mayor Bruce Harrell remains noncommittal on the legislation in Olympia.

In cities of over 75,000 people, all residential areas would have to allow fourplexes. Areas near major transit, parks or schools would have to allow six-plexes, which would be allowed anywhere if two of the units are affordable.

Establish more residential towns that spoke out from industrial centers. Problem solved.

Pretty self explanatory why government is a miserable failure when it takes them decades to simply vote on allowing people to build a duplex.

They're also planning for more multifamily zoning instead of single family homes. Leaving us with less options.

Unless you reduce the fees and absurd (no natural gas) restrictions, that will NEVER happen. wahousedems wasenate jayinslee.

WA State is becoming like Hong Kong, building up instead of out.

With what plans for commuting? Maybe there is a maximum geographical capacity that this region can support and sustain.

I disagree. With the current political policies and taxes, I believe most people with middle class money will be leaving.

The middle class that this state is busy chasing off has not been taken into account. You build for this you are way overshooting

Build more duplexes and townhomes.

Circumventing local zoning laws and mandating up to six residential units on existing single-family lots without off street parking will destroy all neighborhoods.

AFFORDABLE homes

Let not improve the roads.

Plug together modulars home should be allowed to speed things up. Stick built home builders will but members of state government to prevent this. Speed is of the essence but will not be achieved. Useless exercise!

Let’s go ahead a pile a shit ton of extra regulations and permitting right now and get ahead of this. They might actually build them if we don’t.
