'Again and again, this government has turned to the private market to solve its own mess' - Labour leader Ivana Bacik on the coalition's approach to the housing crisis

Under this government, there has been a 'catastrophic' failure to delivery on housing.

That is according to Labour Leader Ivana Bacik, who was speaking at the second night of the party conference in Cork. The attitudes and decisions of the coalition are contributing to the homelessness crisis too, she says."Over 11,700 people, each one with an individual story of distress and hardship, like the young mother who contacted me in despair, facing the cliff edge of eviction next week with no prospect of finding a home anywhere in her community."This week te Government won a Dáil vote opposing a Sinn Féin motion to extend the eviction ban.

The group had issued eight demands that must be met for its support and the Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien suggested he would accept the amendments.Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan voted Níl, losing her the party whip.had the moratorium not been in place.Bacik says the government continues to turn to the private market instead of fixing its own mistakes.

Land is now the smaller part of the construction cost. Banks for developers never reopened after 08' and new international funding is drying up due to rising build costs and interest rate rises

Labour are dead

Let's blame the magnetic poles for housing shortage says Labour Party

Stop politicians objecting to planning applications then.

The construction industry and its member companies are the only ones who can actually build anything... We can't make any progress on housing unless they are at the core of policy

And Labour will be the first to join FFG given a chance

Labour f**ked over the public servants and unionised which were their constituency in 2011 and have been trying to be SF since. A soon to be extinct total irrelevance since.

Labour the austerity party. We remember what you did when you were in bed with FG.

I still have a copy of Labours 2011 election manifesto in my hallway, which I politely show any Labour candidate who comes near my door - housing, health, water charges etc “discussed”. History of doing one thing in opposition and the polar opposite when in government.

Again and again Political parties look to private citizens for votes.

This must be the month of the irrelevant political parties. Last week, our left wing media were flapping over Social Democrats and this week, it's the Labour Party. Who is it next week?

Labour built 75 social housing in 2015 when they had a housing minister. They had ministers that oversaw austerity. They were a massive failure and will be again.

The Government are landlords

Having a rant won't solve housing. Labour pursued a policy of substitution of HAP for building social housing. FG persisted with this for a decade. Poaching on private market is easy for LAs....DarraghOBrienTD must call it out and challenge Cllrs on Nimbyism MichealMartinTD

Did someone from their poverty-stricken front bench just end up at risk of homelessness? Have they stopped objecting to housing in Dublin yet? Cork City will stretch from Crosshaven to Kerry County bounds soon because Labour intends to use construction producer credit to close the gap for a short period leaving us with even more embedded costs ! Californication.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik calls for ‘structural revolution’ in housing provisionSpeaking to delegates in Cork, she accused Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael of 'perpetuating an unequal Ireland'. Half the audience responded enthusiastically… the other dozen or so were busy filling out their SocDems application forms lp23 These woman from vast wealth, who spent her life on giant money being taken care of in academia, who couldn't get elected so was always given a Senate seat, and needed huge media favours to finally get in, bemoans inequality. Connolly would be proud Short memories in labour. In coalition with FG they created inequality and now they think, even Kelly does, that people have forgotten their dirty deeds during their time in Govt. People haven’t forgotten and never will.
