Opinion: Last week Oregon became the first state to enact statewide rent control. It's hard to identify an economic policy with a more proven record of destruction, writes The Editorial Board.

Governor Kate Brown signed legislation last week making Oregon the first state to enact statewide rent control. One would be hard put to identify an economic policy with a more proven record of destruction. Democrats say the law will ease the state’s housing-affordability crisis, but it will make it worse.

Effective immediately, the law prohibits landlords from raising rent by more than 7% over inflation on non-subsidized buildings, with exemptions for the first 15 years of occupancy. It severely restricts when landlords...Kate Bachelder Odell, Mary O'Grady, Allysia Finley and Dan Henninger discuss their hits and misses of the week which include the Trump administration’s tax reforms, Wisconsin governor Tony Evers and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

If I were I landlord, I'd be looking at alternative uses for my rental property. If I were looking to relocate to or visit Oregon, I'd seriously look elsewhere, anywhere else. Rent control is only the beginning

OregonHouseGOP Can’t we refer this to the voters?

Good luck to landlords as their expenses rise and the rents don’t you’re on their way to a Socialist S hole

AmyEVoigt How about the gop tax cut added to years of tax cuts for wealthy who consolidate power to point where wages don’t rise, bridges are in disrepair, and health care cost burden born by middle class? Oh wait you weren’t speaking to us were you?

Liberal left looks happy. Makes you wonder

Try living in Silicon Valley where the greed of landlords is sad to behold. Many don't even do any upgrades. Studios going for $1800. Greed not just for housing, but commercial rentals too. Capitalism at its finest and people are getting sick of it.

Unconstitutional

Let’s all freeze in place and pretend there’s no tomorrow. Stupefying

If the WTJ against it, it must be good for working folks.

Economic stupidity from the Socialist School of Economics. Headquartered in the modern city of Havana, Cuba.

It’s hard to identity a “media” outlet with a more proven record of abysmal, lousy and biased reporting.

SF has rent control and how well did that go? Other than housing all other items rise to where it is unaffordable. Then homeless increase even though there is shelter. Either you allow market forces or go through complete socialism.

Pretty much guaranteed NOT retiring to Oregon

Landlord here. If my state someday implement rent control, that would be my last day as landlord and move my properties to airbnb. Welcome low housing supply

Rent control is awful, writes an editorial board full of well-paid elite Wall Street columnists who don’t actually have to worry about winding up on the street because their shady landlord quadrupled their rent overnight

peterson_alyx Oregon is lost, driven by the progressive elites of Portland. Sadly, the rest of us are at the point where we should vote with our feet.

The mobsters and all their various wannabes won't like that.

let's see if they continue to smile in a few years

ANOTHER ORWELLIAN ACT BY DEMOCRATS!!!

Right. Price fixing has worked everywhere it's been tried. 😂

Goodbye landlords. Hello slums.

Leading to distorted market and broken community.

They were too lazy to keep up affordable housing smh 🤦🏼‍♂️

This is much needed! Unless you live here in Oregon, and rent, your opinion means nothing..

won’t someone think of the parasitic landlords

I 100% support this. Landlords are psychotic.
