The Northern Territory government is ready to walk away from a $1.1 billion deal and put the Commonwealth in control of remote housing in 44 Indigenous communities as the two administrations bump heads over terms of the agreement.

Both governments committed to spending $550 million over the next five years, but NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner says the Coalition has failed to apply any of its funding, eight months after making the promise.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion says the Commonwealth will not hand over any money unless the territory agrees to include the four Aboriginal land council as part of any deal. Mr Gunner says the territory's plan is to decentralise and arrange local decision making agreements with smaller Aboriginal groups. Image: News Corp Australia
