The townhouse in Melbourne’s north-east was initially listed for $900,000 to $950,000, then raised to $1 to $1.1million. It sold for more than $1.5 million.

A real estate company has been charged for allegedly underquoting a townhouse in Melbourne’s north-east that sold at auction for 40 per cent more than the highest estimated selling price.

Barry Plant chief executive officer Lisa Pennell on Saturday denied the underquoting allegations, saying unexpectedly competitive bidding led to the high sale price. “The result ultimately achieved was in his opinion due solely to the highly competitive bidding by two buyer advocates on the day – an anomaly that does happen from time to time in the property market.

Jordan van den Berg has used social media to become an advocate for renters and call out questionable real estate agent practices.Since its inception, the watchdog has received more than 2900 reports of underquoting, which the taskforce uses to identify agents who may be breaking the law. Having amassed an online following of more than 40,000 people in a bid to improve housing conditions, Van den Berg said the taskforce was having meaningful impact for buyers – but the same couldn’t be said for people in the rental market.
