Some tenants of an affordable housing complex in Vancouver who have gone six months without an elevator say they can’t suffer another 11 months while waiting for it to be repaired.
Last month, 73 tenants from 59 units signed a letter deeming the elevators be repaired and that they be compensated for their suffering. About a dozen of them held a rally Saturday demanding immediate action. Sonheim Place, completed in 1992, is operated by the social-service organization S.U.C.C.E.S.S., which has a 60-year lease on the building with B.C. Housing.
“The worst-case scenario is 11 months to order a new elevator and have it installed but in the meantime, we’re still pursuing fixing it temporarily so that it can be functional for people’s use,” she said.Choo said S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has expanded staffing hours to help tenants use the stairs, and has put chairs on each landing where they can rest.
“S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a big organization that lacks respect for the people around here,” Guerin said in French through a friend who translated his remarks.
