Bender and Andrew Duehren May 8, 2019 11:31 p.m. ET President Trump said Wednesday his administration would give $448 million in disaster-relief funding for the Florida Panhandle, more than six months after Hurricane Michael made landfall and caused billions of dollars in property damage.
The region is awaiting more aid in a disaster-relief bill that has stalled in Congress. President Trump and Republicans have sought to curb the amount of funding sent to Puerto Rico, which was devastated by two hurricanes in 2017, insisting that the U.S. territory hasn’t properly spent previous federal aid. Democrats have pushed to include more money for the island, and Puerto Rican officials have denied allegations that they had misspent the funds.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump said the new round of money would come from a Housing and Urban Development recovery fund to “help communities get back on their feet.”The rally was Mr. Trump’s first in Florida since the midterm elections and his fourth of the year. He predicted the Democratic race would come down to former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders , who are currently leading most primary polls. He also mused about a dip in the polls for former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, saying the Texas Democrat was “folding like a rock.”
Trump also joked about murdering refugee families.
