PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte asked the Commission on Audit to reconsider its report flagging the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council for allotting over P5 million from the Marawi funds for the annual Islamic pilgrimage.
Duterte’s spokesman and chief legal counsel, Salvador Panelo, had said that HUDCC may be held for technical malversation following the CoA findings. “I would like to tell [CoA] not to meddle with it. Because as a matter of fact, there is a fund that [is] set aside to enhance the travel of our brothers and sisters for the pilgrimage to fulfill a lifetime dream,” he said.
Duterte said that if you ask the people, Hajj pilgrimage would be “more important” than the housing projects.“You can forget about the housing there that is being planned by government. But to the individual Muslim believer, five mansions from the government [is] but a simple token of generosity so he can go to Hajj,” he said.“Sometimes, you have to take into consideration really the subculture. We have a culture, the Filipino, Malay culture.
