The Victorian government's sudden decision to impose a hard lockdown on the residents of nine Melbourne public housing blocks is causing hardship.

The Victorian government's"ham-fisted" decision to lock down residents in nine inner-Melbourne public housing blocks for five days has blindsided thousand of people.

While the association welcomed the state Labor government's decision to waive rent payments for a fortnight, tenants believed they were being discriminated against. The hard lockdown was imposed by the government on Saturday in a bid to contain a break out of coronavirus after 27 people in the North Melbourne and Flemington towers tested positive to COVID-19.

The hc towers are ugliest buildings I have ever seen and having to live in such congested surroundings would some people to suicide and are just slums

Bunch of whingers!

Amuses me that there's a rule for 1 & then another if you're a football player & a family member of said player

Boo hoo. Seriously it’s a few days.

What hardship? Shows how entitled these people are. Money paid. Free rental. Food & medical supplies. They are living in one of the best public housing in the world funded with tax payer money. Just shut up and do your part ! Shameless !

These R really racist & classist, these draconian lockdowns! No1 has died in ALL of Australia in over a week...only 2 WuhanVirus deaths in a month. That box of Gubmint food was PATHETIC! Very North Korean tactics (they’d luv the food thou!) by Despot Dan Andrews! Nauseating!

Who knew that hardship these days equated to free rent, free food, cash payments, free drugs, alcohol and staying in your own home. I'm sorry but how f$ soft have we really become! My nonno who came here w nothing but a shirt on his back had it too easy it seems🤮

14 days hardship ? A joke....right ? Do the right thing ! The government gives them all the supports they needed to be there.

For a virus that has a 99.96% survival rate?

My child is crying and in serious distress because i will not let him play on the road in the traffic.. Oh dear what should i do?

They were already suffering from hardship. Those towers should never have been built, they are death traps.

Seems like the whole joint needs locking down again

It's not meant to be a picnic. We are talking about saving lives. Ambushed? Of course they were ambushed. Otherwise they would have fled like rats leaving a sinking ship and made the situation 10x worse.

Don't forget to thank China.

Why are journalists carrying on about 'sudden decision' ? Are you all totally devoid of any sense? Could this have been effective after giving notice in advance?

And your alternative solution is......?

What about the hardship CV19 is causing all Victorians?Perhaps if the restrictions had been adhered to the imposition of new resrtricitions would not be required.

Firemonkey991 IMHO: 2 weeks free rent, $1500 gift, 5 days off, food delivered to your door and I’m sure they’ll take care of bread and milk today..... Stop bitching. It’s not a cage it’s your taxpayer subsidised home.

Hardship They are getting extra money, food and rent paid. Why are they facing hardship. It’s only 5 days

This is some hardcore dystopian tyranny. Andrews has crossed the line.

ABC reporting that the government stuffed up, what about the individuals that didn’t self isolate. So they didn’t do anything wrong?

You can't do 5 days? In your homes? With handouts, supplies dropped off for free? Well then.

China has caused this hardship

While that may be so, inaction would have caused much more widespread disastrous hardships. Great to see the Australian community coming together to support the residents.

SBS should stop shit stirring. You know the virus needs to be controlled before we end up with numbers equal to the UK or US. Yet you continue to stir the pot. Dan Andrews is doing an excellent job by the way!

Its a disgrace, and should be taken to court for improper use of power

This virus is causing hardship. The lock down, though harsh, is meant to save lives........show the value of support structures. When will we learn?

Rent waived for 3,000 Melbourne public housing tenants under hard lockdownVictoria records another 74 new coronavirus cases overnight as Premier Daniel Andrews announces the tenants of nine public housing towers placed under hard lockdown will not have to pay rent for two weeks. They probably never pay their rent anyway. Question for the ABC. I agree both premiers are responsible for each debacle, but during the Ruby Princess debacle, most of the story photos were oh the cruise ship and not of GladysB . Why are you only showing pictures of DanielAndrewsMP here? Is this not a form of media bias? Stands to reason not to charge rent. Prisoners aren’t expected to pay rent.

HorseShit Drastic measures, on a very select group of people, *months* after hand wringing and mixed messaging during critical time frames- predominantly from the PM saying, 'It's safe to go to the footy. 5G Protests are fine. Schools are the safest place, etc.' Plague boats, and all that. This is clear evidence that Gov do Not have an understanding of trauma.
