Ofgem, the energy regulator, is launching an urgent investigation into British Gas following allegations the company sent debt collectors who broke into customers' homes to install prepayment meters.
"These are extremely serious allegations from The Times. We are launching an urgent investigation into British Gas and we won't hesitate to take firm enforcement action," an Ofgem spokesperson said. "The energy crisis is no excuse for unacceptable behaviour towards any customer, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances."
Theyve been doing it for years and prepayment users get the worst rates
The UK has become a playground for fraudsters, money men, corruption & rule breaking. Meanwhile the Government has gone AWOL while people suffer the consequences. A GE now would be very welcome but cults usually go right to the end before they listen if they ever do.
What about the rest of the companies. ScottishPower keep adding fictitious charges to the meter that was here when I moved in. I've told them to take it out but they are stalling. They are making people who don't even have debt the waiting time to remove them is weeks
Rather than just suspending the practice, it should be stopped and all meters removed asap. Centrica CEO Chris O'Shea should resign or be sacked, he allowed his rentathugs to bully extremely vulnerable people.
Been happening for years, know someone this happened to back in about 2012! Locksmith came with energy co reps, guy was at home though, he let them in, he thought courts had authorised it!? Had electricity prepayment meter forcefully fitted by two goons that day.
Anyone due to pay them now won't bother, only makes it more expensive for everyone else.
aka they got caught.
They should be investigating all of them, Scottish Power is appaling !! They are doing exactly the same thing !! Ofgem themselves need 'Investigating' as they are NOT doing what they are supposed to either.. This has been happening for a long time so where have they been
Ah good old British Gas. They switched my electric from edf to them when I had never ever spoke to them. Wasted a day on the phone getting it switched back and only did it once I threatened legal action
ofgem financialombuds and anyone supposedly there to help you do the complete opposite all are not fit for purpose and need getting rid of
